Flames of Sorrow To pick up a load of bread That what I was told Get it back to Mama Before it got cold That wasn’t hard to do I could get it done After that I could go out with my sister And have a little fun War was happening over seas Glad it was far away from me Skipping down the road To pick up a loaf of bread Slowly looking up To see what lay ahead Men riding on horses quickly towards our town Their pounding hooves making quite a sound The soldiers grinned With one thing on their minds Looking for the enemy Hoping that’s what they’d find The adults grabbed their children And ran for their houses People screaming and scampering Like frightened mouse’s I hid in an empty water barrel I had to be be quiet and very careful Through a small whole I watched them prance around the land With grins on their faces And torches in hand When people tried to leave their houses They threatened to shoot them if they came out As the torches hit the dry would of the houses I could hear their screams and shouts It didn’t take long For my town to be in flames Then the soldiers left As fast as they came I jumped out of the barrel And ran to find my family The house fell down with my family inside And I said to no one calmly “We did nothing to deserve this fate It came less than late.” I lowered my head in respect Then I found a horse and road away My town was destroyed by bloodshed and hate And I’ve sworn never to forget That day Back
